Timor (Asia)
Timor inspired this section of my website. It was last year sometime that I had purchased some beans from one of my vendors and upon roasting a batch and sharing it with my customer, I quickly realized I had no clue about this country. During our hour long ride to Newark Airport, my friend and customer Scott decided to research a bit more about the coffee we were drinking. I was fascinated that coffee was 1 of 4 main sources of revenue for this small island once associated with Indonesia. Like so many small countries today, they have broken away from larger bodies of land in search of their independence and cultural pursuit.
The Timor bean I have produced is from a cooperative, co-op for short. A co-op is basically what it sounds like, a group of farmers working together to better leverage a common goal of selling their coffee, with and working together sharing resources to offer a more competitive crop in short. This bean comes from the independent region of Timor, known as East Timor, formerly of Portuguese colonization and influence and Indonesian take over. It is an impoverished country seeking sustainability since it’s independence in 2002.
